What are ground peeled tomatoes?!
What are ground peeled tomatoes?
I wanted to try a tomato sauce recipe that calls for 2 - 28 oz. cans of ground peeled tomatoes. I have never heard of this before and I buy canned tomatoes all the time. What is it? Is it regional? If I can't find it, what can I use as an equivalent substitute?
Answers:
Read the label; most canned tomatoes are peeled and, of course, they're available all over.
Ground? If you can't find them just put them in a blender for 10 seconds and voila! Ground Peeled Tomatoes!
.
It's quite common and I'd be surprised if you can't find it in your best local grocery.
They're just peeled tomatoes that have been ground up so that they are not chunky but still have more texture than plain tomato sauce.
If you really can't find them, toss a can of peeled tomatoes in your blender and pulse it for a few times, that will approximate the same texture.
My guess would be it means diced peeled tomatoes. They could be used.
They mean crushed tomatoes, which are peeled and "ground".
