Do you know of a subsititute for cilantro?!

Question:

Do you know of a subsititute for cilantro?

I am allergic to cilantro, but many of the recipes that I want to use contain cilantro as a main spice (or herb, whatever category it falls into). Is there a substitute or different spice or herb that would work instead of that?

Answers:
Because you are allergic to cilantro, you are probably allergic to coriander. Sorry, BigDog, I don't mean to be disagreeable but there shouldn't be a disagreement about where it comes from. If you let a cilantro plant bolt, or go to seed, it will develop seeds (shaped like balls) on the leaves, these seeds are coriander. It is from the same plant so please don't eat it if you are not sure. I would actually substitute with oregano, it has the more intense flavor along the lines of what cilantro would give a dish. Parsley is a good candidate, but so are chervil, summer savory, even arugula has a nice peppery bite.

You could probably just use fresh parsley, or large leaf Italian parsley if you wanna be fancy. I absolutely LOVE cilantro, but I know some people don't like it.

The only thing that jumped to mind is parsley...would that work?

Parsley?

You can use parsley, italian parsley works better. I'm one of those people who can't eat cilantro because it tastes like soap (lacking an enzyme, I guess).

Note, if you are allergic to cilantro, you are also likely allergic to coriander.

there isn't anything out there that tastes as good as cilantro. your next best bet would be flat leaf (italian) parsley. not the same, but that's as close as you're going to get.

corriander is the cilantro seed

It depends on the recipe but off the top of my head....Flat Leaf Parsley(which is commonly referred to as italian parsley) would work with just about any meal......basil perhaps if you are making something with pasta.

You might consider trying Corriander. It and Cilantro are from the same plant thought Cilantro comes from the leaf and Corriander comes from the seed or stem itself. Also, Papalo is another subsitutue for Cilantro and has more of a peppery mexican scent and flavor.

Flat leaf Italian Parsley is your best bet, but liking the flavor.

Be careful. Cilantro, corriander, dhania, Mexican Parsley, and Chinese parsley are ALL THE SAME!

Some say the seeds of cilantro are corriander, but there are many places that will disagree with this.

Corriander is the US name for cilantro. BUT, cilantro is more widly accepted.

Yes! Marjoram and cilantro are interchangeable.

italian or flatleaf parsley not the curly one should work fine

Yes coriander and cilantro are from the same plant so it's probably not a good idea to use corriander as a substitute. If you live in an area where there is a large Puerto Rican neighborhood check around if any of the grocery/produce stores have culantro (with a u). It is similar in taste to cilantro but is prevalent in Puerto Rican cooking. Hope this helps.
