How can I barbecue baby potatoes?
Specifically, my problem is what kind of container to use so they don't roll all over. This is a campsite barbecue with an open fire and a grill but the grill is pretty small and there's a lot of little potatoes to feed about ten people. I already parboiled them so they don't take too long to barbecue. I do know how to cook, like in a kitchen. When I put them on the barbecue, should they just be wrapped in a honking amount of foil, or should I buy something like one of those foil roasting pans, or what? I don't want to take any heavy cookware.
Answers:
aluminum foil. either make a packet, or just set them on it. you could also skewer them like a kabob.
Yes you can Barbecue the potatoes. If you parboiled them, put in a foil will be a good idea. If you have not boiled them at all, just simply slice them and brush with oil before cooking.
There are baskets that are specifically to barbecue vegetables.

This is just to show you what they look like, you can get one at most places that have barbecue equipment (even Home Depot).
slice in half and toss them in a mixture with onions garlic and olive oil, seal them in a foil packet, (heavy duty foil) and flip it every 10 minutes or so, they will cook through in about 35 40 minutes on high. Or if you like them blackened a bit get a grill rack (they are real cheap) and basically have a bunch of small squares on it to let he heat and flames through but wont let the food through. OR my personal favorite , put a cast iron skillet on the grill and preheat, through in some onions and garlic and brown then put in the potatoes and toss occasionally.
If you leave them whole they will take a lot longer to heat up. If you have a lot of time, great. If not, I'd slice them, sprinkle some italian dressing on them (or oil and seasonings) and wrap them in foil. Put them on the grill first and let them heat if you don't have enough room. If the meat isn't done when you take them off...just leave them in the foil and wrap them in a towel. They'll stay nice and hot. :) Have fun! Reminds me of hobo dinners. I make them camping every year. Yum!
a really fun thing to do is "hobo pack" them ... wrap them in foil with butter and seasonings and bury them in the warm ashes. this works better with raw potatoes and time, but you might get good results ...
a foil roasting pan is easier ... hot potatoes wrapped in hot foil will be entertaining for everyone but you when it's time to take them off the grill. you can pick the pan up a lot more easily. if the spuds are going directly against the fire, make sure you cover the pan, they'll warm up a lot faster
