Do you always follow the recipe religiously?!

Question:

Do you always follow the recipe religiously?

Or do you sometimes use some of your own ideas? Or, like me, do you stay out of the kitchen at all costs?

Answers:
Recipes are only guidelines. If you think that something should be added/taken out, then go ahead. The Best part of cooking is experimenting with different flavours.

The only time that rule does not apply is in baking because measurements need to be fairly exact. But, even then, you can still try different flavours/extracts if you don't like the ones in the recipe.

Well, me and my hubby are picky, so we leave out stuff all the time!!

it depends on the recipe.. some i make on my own and some i follow..

I don't cook

I eat to stay alive,,,a porridge is fair enough,,,and no recipe there ;)

I change certain things. Say, it calls for lemon juice...I'll use lime or orange to get another taste. Works out pretty good.

The first time I follow the directions.....and then if I like it, or think it would taste really good wtih a twist....then I do it my way from then on......

When cooking at home, I just eyeball everything (except when baking), but at work the recipes are followed precisely for the sake of consistency and food cost.

i cook the way i like it

i never follow a dinner receipe to the tee with baking i do for the most part.

yea

Being in the restarant business for seven years, I've changes a few of my favorite recipes to my own liking, but usually I make my own recipes.

There's a rule of thumb regarding this.
If you're cooking, you can use your own ideas and don't have to measure every ingredient exactly.
If you're baking, you need to follow the recipe exactly.

Only when baking or doing a recipe for the first time. Then I can figure out what to change next time. But even the first time if the recipe sounds good but has something we hate, like fennel, I'll leave that out. And I always add more garlic than a recipe calls for. OK, so I don't always follow the recipe the first time. :)

I don't always like all the ingredients in the recipe... and sometimes I like a certain ingredient more than anything else... so I add and subtract :D and come up with my own version of the recipe.

Sometimes I follow a recipe as written but other times I will substitute or leave out certain items. For example, I do not like onions or celery so I will substitute other veggies or seasonings in recipes that call for those items. Other times, I will just leave out those items that I do not like or have.

it all depends on where the cooking is taking place and who you are cooking for. if you are doing it for a living, then, yes it's best to follow the recipe exact. if you're cooking for yourself, then you can substitute food items you don't care for or leave them out all together. there's nothing wrong w/ experimenting while you are cooking.
