I'm hispanic, but my hubby is caucasian... We love grilling pork chops, chicken, or burgers on the bbq. We also enjoy hot dogs, pizza, and meatloaf.

Something perfect for a beginner would be some Hamburger Helper, with a garden salad and steamed vegetables.

Actually Americans eat quite a variety of foods.
The best way is to cook what you are really good at, at first...then ask her to show you a few things. Most women love to swap recipes. Take her to the grocery store with you and let her pick her favorite lunch and snack items.

I would suggest having the following things on hand and have her pick what she would like:

Breakfast - Bacon, eggs, toasted bread, oatmeal, sliced grapefruit, raisin bran cereal, english muffins.

Lunch - Cans of soup, or homemade soups, ham and cheese sandwiches, lettuce and tomato salad. A bowl of warm soup and some crusty bread with ham & cheese is delicious and healthy.

Dinner meal (late evening) - Since you have a grill, how about grill some chicken or pork chops and make a nice salad and some buttered pasta. Or a baked potato with a piece of grilled steak and grilled asparagus is great.

hope this helps.

Older people usually like casseroles and they are super easy to make. A casserole is essentially a bunch of ingredients you throw together in a glass dish then put in the oven. A good recipe site is www.bettycrocker.com and also www.allrecipes.com. Just search for casseroles. There are even breakfast casseroles w/ eggs and veggies.

American families usually eat lots of chicken. You can do a nice grilled chicken with maccaroni and cheese. Buy fresh boneless chicken breasts at the grocery store. Put them in a ziploc bag with an easy marinade. You can either do a marinade yourself or they sell ones in a bottle that you can just pour into the bag. Put the bag w/ the chicken into your fridge for a few hours then put it on the grill.

Chicken kabobs are great. I love corn on the cob - makes a great side dish. Lasagne is also a great, easy dish to make.

Goodluck and you're are a very good wife for letting your mother-in-law come live with you.

As was mentioned, there's no single staple food for Americans. But especially among older people, I find there are certain expectations. You have to have meat. You have to have something starchy. For a lot of older Americans "meat and potatoes" isn't just an expression, it's a doctrine. I've never eaten a meal at my grandparents' house that didn't have meat, bread, and potatoes. In my family, things like pot roast, roast beef and chicken, stews, and mashed potatoes are common.

Again, though, it really depends on the person. Why don't you talk to her about her favourite foods? It might be interesting for both of you.

Good luck!
