Food in plastic container?!

Question:

Food in plastic container?

Hi all,

We will be travelling to canada next week , it will take almost 11- 13 hours to reach the destination . My question is we are planning to bring some home cooked food with us , will it get spoiled , im planning to bring some coconut rice and some other curries , is that ok if i put it in a plastic food container or do i need to buy any special food box . I will be cooking it a day earlier and refrigerate it and then heat it on the travel day in microvawe , is that ok ?

Pls advice .

Answers:
Buy an ice chest, they have cheap disposable ones made out of styrofoam and buy plenty of reusable ice packs. Pack the food just before you are ready to go. It would be a pity to spend your vacation sick from spoiled food. Good luck and have fun!

I personally think that it would be much safer to buy a special food box, they do come quite cheap. Using a plastic box means that the heat can easily get to it, iff you get a cool box then there is no way of this happening

yes that's fine you might want to keep it on ice.

It is an urban myth that plastic containers leach cancer causing elements into food. There is no scientific evidence that supports this theory.

The curry might permanently discolor the container itself, so that the once clear plastic container will be forevermore yellow or red, but it shouldn't harm the food.

You might want to keep the containers in a cooler with ice, though, so that it doesn't spoil.

See the article at the link below:

The food needs to be kept at -40 or +140 to be safe from bacterial growth.

If there's meat in the curries, I definitely would not eat them after 11 hours out of the fridge. BUT, if you heated them up really hot just before you ate them, it should kill anything nasty.

Also, will they still allow you on a plane with liquidy curry? There are new rules on international flights restricting liquids of more than 100mls to checked baggage. Don't know about Canada, but it applies to Australia and Norway, so I would check.

Yes you need an Ice chest.
get a good one NOT too big
Seperate the ice to carry the bread and other fixings for sandwhiches...

Rice tends to grow mold just because it is a very moist in the first place and is a starch. So it is the perfect breeding ground for microorganisms. Keep it cool with ice and a cooler and it will be fine. Dry ice would be the intense way of doing it.
