How do I prepare sliced yams for a baby?!
How do I prepare sliced yams for a baby?
I want to make him some cooked sweet potatoes - but since he's 11 months old and eating many table foods, I'd like to slice and bake them. How should they be prepared? What degree oven? How long should they bake for? Should I grease the cookie sheet or no? How do I keep them once they're done - in the fridge? For how long?

No, I do NOT want mashed sweet potatoes. If I did, I would just buy Gerber. I want baked, sliced yams that will kind of be like soft cookies.

Sweet Potato Fries
Preheat oven to 400degrees(F)
Scrub sweet potatoes clean and/or peel them if baby cannot handle the skins
Cut into sizes that will suit your needs or, cut into strips that you may then cut down after baking
In a large bowl, add about 1/4 cup of olive oil.
To this you may add cinnamon, ginger, a pinch of brown sugar, etc.. (I add cinnamon and sometimes a bit of brown sugar).
Toss the cut up sweet potatoes into the bowl and stir so that the potatoes are drenched with the olive oil mix.
Dump mixture onto a baking sheet and drizzle the remaining olive oil in the bowl over the potatoes on the baking sheet.
Stir and swirl the potatoes on the baking sheet before placing in oven.
Bake for approx 30-45minutes or until tender.
The skins may become crispy but the actual potato "meat" will not. They will be a bit mushy like. These will not look or bake up like regular white potato French Fries so don't be alarmed!
This is the basic way to do it and you can improvise as much as you want

I think you're making this harder than it has to be.
Take several thick slices of the peeled yam and put it in a heatproof bowl with a tablespoon of water. Cover with plastic wrap and poke a little hole in it. Microwave for 3-5 minutes, or until the yam is soft. Let it cool, mash it up with a little of the water, and poof! Baby food.
Babies don't like spices, but you could add some milk, cream, or butter.
Babies that are starting to feed themselves will love them before they're mashed. Just cut them into little cubes.
Same method works for regular potatoes. Babies love buttered or creamy mashed potatoes! Don't you?
