Spice Question(s)............?!
Spice Question(s)............?
Just how long can spices can last in the cupboard for? 1 Year, or how often should I replace my spices?
I get them at Bulk Barn, do you think it's a good idea to get in bulk or buy at the grocery store where it's stored in bottles or bag?
Please reply pleasant responses pls & thx!

Most spices can last for a long time providing you put them in an air-tight container. However if left opened most spice loses it's flavour and potency.Personally unless your using spices for many dishes I would prefer to buy at grocery store. We(in New Zealand) buy the Master Food Spices. At www.masterfoods.com There is a huge range of savoury and sweet spices.I see theyr'e available in Australia,NZ, and South Africa, but I expect the States will have them to? They are in 47 gram bottles with a shaker top.And we can get refills. So Spice up your life. Good Luck!
It is never a good idea to buy spices in bulk. Most spices lose their potency at about 6 months.
wat is spices???
one year is a good guideline...only buy in bulk if you use that much..also when you replace your spices don't forget the baking soda and baking powder as they lose their strength in about the same period of time
Small quantities are good, if you buy in bulk - vacuum pack in smaller quantities and keep in dark area, open and use as needed. Spices should be used within 3 months or in the case of vacuumed packed, within 3 months of opening.
If you buy in bulk... try freezing some of it.
I replace my spices about once a year(if I don't use it all up by then)
I don't really notice a change in flavor or anything, it's just a personal choice.
Plus, buy the little bottles in the baking section... they're like $2 each....
that way after a year goes by you won't feel that you're wasting money by replacing them.
Works for me!
Have a good one!
People are very insistent about spices. I have spices on my shelf that are years old...and they work fine. I just made some pickled beets from one of those bulk packages that I've had for at least 6 years and -- guess what -- they turned out great. Don't worry about it, the bulk spices work fine as long as you keep them on the shelf not out in the light.
well buy in bulk if you cook or use alot of spices... don't want to waste $$$
The shelf life of herbs and spices will vary according to the form and plant part, too. (Those that have been cut or powdered have more surface area exposed to the air and so lose their flavor more rapidly than whole herbs and spices, for example.) Here are some guidelines:
Whole Spices and Herbs:
Leaves and flowers 1 to 2 years
Seeds and barks 2 to 3 years
Roots 3 years
Ground Spices and Herbs:
Leaves 1 year
Seeds and barks 1 year
Roots 2 years
Teas
Black, green, white and oolong 1 year

How can you tell if your seasoning is past its prime? The shelf life of each herb and spice is different, and all age, even under the best conditions. Check your herbs and spices―and those you consider purchasing―to see that they look fresh, not faded, and are distinctly aromatic. Replace them as soon as you detect deterioration
Most spices will last for a long time as long as they are in a glass or plastic container, never leave them in plastic bags. Also is best to keep them in the dark to avoid fading, like the paprika or chile powder, they also tend to lose some of the scent if left opened for long periods of time. Bulk is not the best way to buy, but if you do, make sure that they don't have excess humidity, that will alter the flavor and speed decomposition and sourness.
