Any good ideas for chewy food that is healthy and low in sugar?
I have a four year old that has ssensory issues, and likes to chew on things. We have discovered he likes shewy foods like marshmallows and licorice, but gets too hyper if he has a lot of sugar. I need good ideas for chewy snacks that are healthy and low in sugar. I have explored the whole foods stores and considered items such as dried pineapple, papaya, mango, etc. The problem is the added sugar. I have settled for dried apples with the texture of marshmallows. All good ideas will be appreciated.

Raisins are a good suggestion, but tend to have what I consider a lot of sugar with approximately 25g of sugar per 1oz. serving. In example, plain cherios have 3g of sugar for 1-1/4 cup serving.

I would consider 1/2 cup packed brown sugar to be a lot of sugar.

I might also add that my child also react to foods that have red and yellow dyes.

You can make your own dried fruit. Walmart and Target has some pretty cheap food dehydraters. Here is one from Walmart.

This way there won't be any added sugar.
how about raisins? are they high in sugar - im not sure - but i would think they are healthy : )
Any food that states it is low in sugar, is normally high in fats and vice versa, if it is low in fat, it is high in sugar, there does not seem to be a happy medium in this world, where we can all honestly eat healthy and feel good about it. If we were all to get too healthy, the food manufacturers would go broke, don't you think?
red vines and black vines make sugar free versions. they're in the candy isle at the grocery store.
try dried fruits with no added sugar.

Chewy Chocolate Chip Granola Bars
INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2/3 cup peanut butter
5 tablespoons corn syrup
1/2 cup applesauce
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 cups rolled oats
1 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup miniature marshmallows
1/2 cup toasted oat cereal rings
2/3 cup wheat germ
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
In a large bowl, stir together the peanut butter, corn syrup, applesauce, and vanilla. In a separate bowl, stir together the oats, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, cereal rings and wheat germ. Stir the dry ingredients into the peanut butter mixture until evenly coated. Press lightly into the prepared pan.
Bake or 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until slightly golden. Cool in the pan on a wire rack. Cut into bars.
They sell chewy granola bars that have less sugar than the regular ones. They're made by quaker and make great healthy snacks.
You could invest in a food dehydrator and make all kinds of chewy treats without adding anything.
