When I barbeque in a kettle grill do I need to leave the top on or off?!

Question:

When I barbeque in a kettle grill do I need to leave the top on or off?

I don't know if I need oxygen to keep the grill hot but I can't seem to keep the heat. I always kept the lid off but it takes forever to cook anything.

Answers:
Leave the lid on, but make sure the vents are open all the way, and don't forget about the one on the bottom of the grill.

Open a vent to admit air so the fire is fed. Close the lid for a smokey flavor.

Top on definitely. Leaving the top on ensures that the inside of the meat is nice and not burnt. Having the lid off lets valuable heat escape. A big no no in grilling.

Keep the top on with the little vents open so that the fire keeps burning. But check on it a few times so it doesnt burn.

Put the coals on one side, sear the meat on both sides there, then move it over to the other side and put the lid on. You'll have perfect meat everytime!!

I just saw this today on Food Network! Keep the lid on. Otherwise it's like "trying to roast with the oven door wide open".
