Does miso soup have fish in it?!

Question:

Does miso soup have fish in it?

or any other animal ingredient?

Answers:
The answer to this question is yes. The stock used to prepare miso soup is made from dried bonito. This stock is called dashi, and it's a staple of Japanese cooking. Without it, Japanese cuisine would lose most of its authenticity. You could easily substitute good-quality chicken broth if you wish.

no

Miso is soybean paste; the soup is usually made with dashi (fish stock) and kombu (seaweed) as well as miso; so yes, it usually does, when you are eating in a restaurant; but if you make it at home you can substitute vegetable stock.

It can.
If you use Dashi (stock) made with Bonito shaving
( katsuo bushi) it has fish.

You can get a konbu-dashi ( kelp stock) and it is Vegan.

You can use veggie stock too.

yummm! I love miso soup.

Just like all the others are saying, the stock (dashi) is made with fish. In my cooking class we had some japanese girls come in and make us miso soup, and they also added in dried anchovies....... I am a vegetarian so I didn't try any.

It can be made with fish stock sometimes or without fish stock depending on the recipe. You would have to ask whoever made it if it contained fish stock or fish or if it is vegetarian
