What can I substitute for butter/Margarine?!

Question:

What can I substitute for butter/Margarine?

I'm using Pillsbury Cake mix (Golden Butter Recipe) and it calls for 1 cup water, 1/3 cup butter or margarine, and 3 eggs .. the problem is I don't have enough butter .. what can I use instead?? and do you think its going to come out the same??

Many people have found (because they are trying to reduce fat) that applesauce can be substituted in the same amount for oil or butter/margarine. The baked product comes out just as well, and with the correct texture.

Remember, though, that the packaged mix you're using is called Golden Butter Recipe. It's meant to taste like butter. So even though you'll get a nice product, you're leaving out the ingredient that's supposed to give the cake its distinct flavor.

do you have shortening? You can use the same amount of shortening as butter.

Or you can use oil, but you will need to cut back on the amount of water.

Good luck!

Just use what you have, you don't need the full 1/3 cup. Add oneTBL oil.

olive oil..you can even put olive oil in the freezer and it will harden like butter..then refrigerate for daily use..it's good for you too...the more "virgin" the oil the stronger the taste.

Olive Oil.

I'm not sure about the olive oil suggestion especially extra virgin, since it will have a flavoring of olives, not something desirable in a cake.

I suppose since most margarine are modified oils, you could use a more neutral oil like vegetable oil.
