How much vanilla extract does it take to equal 2 vanilla beans?!

Question:

How much vanilla extract does it take to equal 2 vanilla beans?

Answers:
1 teaspoon for every bean, for you, 2 teaspoons for 2 vanilla beans! yum!

10 gallons

Its not as simple an answer as you might hope for or expect, as it depends upon the brand of extract. Vanilla is extracted from beans using alcahol - most Food and Drug regs seem to put 35% as the min alcahol permissable.

I have some Nielsren-Massey vanilla extract and vanilla bean paste here. Interestingly the extract doesnt tell you the ratio but the paste has this on the jar.

1 table spoon of paste = 1 bean
1 table spoon of paste = 1 table spoon of vanilla extract

So if you were using their vanilla extract the answer to you question is 1 table spoon.

I would use more than a tea spoon if the receipe calls for a whole pod.

Of course you have to use Real Vanilla essence not the rubbish available in most supermarkets that's just artificial essence. I bought my Vanilla essence from Lakeland Ltd and it was excellent a high percentage of real vanilla pod distilled in alcohol. I believe it was around £4 a bottle. Nothing worse than artificial vanilla essence, might as well enjoy the real McCoy.
