Answers:
Two methods come to mind, both require a little skill on your part.
1) use a large cake pan, you might need two or three boxes of mix, or double or tripple your recipe, you be the judge. Once baked and cooled, turn over onto a cookie sheet and carve into the silohette of an elephant. does not neet to be too detailed, simple and catoonish is good. Frost with pink or purple frosting. candy-forn for the tusks.
2) bake several round cakes, stack one on top of another. you might need three or four, use frosting between like any other cake, then carve way everything that is not an elephant. if you are really skilled, cover with fondant then frost. no need to make the elephant stand on its legs, it could be laying down or sitting. if you do want legs, buy some PVC from you local hardware store, cut four pieces about three inches long. set a rectangular pieces of plywood or one by eight on the four legs, then stack and carve your cake. this you will need to cover with fondant before frosting. do not eat the fondant or icing that coveres the PVC, it could be toxic. this will take a lot of skill, and you might want to practice once before the main event, but it will nock the socks off your guests. it is also the main method they use on the show 'Ace of Cakes". I have tried it, it works but is difficult at best.
best of luck

I saw a program on TV that made an elephant and it was really cute. They made the trunk of the elephant out of rice krispies with marshmallows.

if you just do the head with big ears coloured pink, grey icing all over and a trunk poking up with a skewer to hold it in place.
then you can have the candle poking out the top of the trunk!
