flour, sugar, oil or butter, eggs, baking soda, salt, baking powder, then flavorings...vanilla , or another essence of some kind eg almond..etc
As long as you use the main ingredients add what ever you like.
If you don't have any recipe books go on line to find a basic cake recipe. I always have fun with cakes. You can add almost anything you want. Try adding sprinkles to the batter before baking it. If you add things like raisins, careful not to add to many if the recipe does not call for it as it may alter your results too much. After you've baked a few cakes, you get the feel for it. Also try adding a flavour, or food colouring.
You need a good recipe to follow because the proportions of the ingredients are really important. Because what you are really doing is creating a scientific experiment and you need to get the proper reactions specifically if you don't have the right amount of leavening(this is the reaction that creates gas) you'll have a flat cake that is hard to chew. And if you don't have enough emulsifiers(typically eggs) the ingredients won't hold together and the cake is crumbly.
Try a Betty Crocker cookbook they're usually easy to follow and some have step-by-step instructions
basic ingredients you have to use include flour, baking soda or powder (cream of tartar can be used, too, because these basically help make the cake spread and rise), sugar, eggs (or applesauce and banana equivalent for vegans, only to keep the cake together and solid), vanilla extract (or almond extract, just for taste), water and/or soymilk/milk.
since im a die-hard vegan, you can check out this link:http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=6686.0...
for a vegan, moist chocolate cake. the only thing you have to worry about is whether or not your oven is potent enough. other than that, its simple. you can adjust most of the ingredients listed, like adding in some nuts or berries, or replacing the egg with a banana.
You can look up "Basic cake Recipe" then you can add cocoa, fruit etc. Main ingredients are Self raising flour, butter eggs, sugar, vanilla essence and milk.
A cake made from scratch is a wonderful thing. To be successful, you will need to find a recipe. Once you have some baking experience, you can come up with your own recipe.
As a professional baker, I have cookbooks for everything. I also find recipes online. I would suggest looking online for a recipe, but can recommend a couple of websites.
www.cakecentral.com is my fave. This is a site for cake decorators, but they have good, basic recipes that bakers have tested and use.
