Why does the pizza dough I make taste sweet?
I like making pizzas, but whenever I make them the dough tastes sweet, unlike Dominos pizza.
I just use self-raising flour and water and stuff... no sugar! Is there something you add to make it taste... pizzarey?

4 1/2 cups (20.25 ounces) unbleached high-gluten, bread, or all-purpose flour, chilled
1 3/4 (.44 ounce) teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon (.11 ounce) instant yeast
1/4 cup (2 ounces) olive oil (optional)
1 3/4 cups (14 ounces) water, ice cold (40°F)
Semolina flour or cornmeal for dusting
Flour, water, olive oil, salt, sugar, yeast. That's all I ever use.
If you don't use sugar then the yeast has nothing to work with.
Switch from self-rising flour to all purpose flour and yeast.
You will need to add a bit of sugar for the yeast to chew on, but you will be able to control the amount if you do it from scratch.

Add a little mustard to the liquid, and if you like some basil too.
try adding something like Oregano and basil to the dough. It tastes good, and will cut down the sugar. Also, don't use self-rising flour. It's much better to use regular flour and yeast. There is actually some sugar in the self-rising flour.
As someone has already suggested, use some herbs - basil, oregano or something.
Alternatively if you are using Olive Oil, this can sometimes have a very strong fruity flavour - which could be interpreted as sweet, so perhaps try using a garlic, or herb olive oil to give the dough some further depth of flavour.
You really shouldn't leave the sugar out as the yeast uses the sugar as 'food' - but if you use the granules of yeast and mix it with water and sugar you can control how much you use, it smells like beer, but it makes fantastic dough.
