No baking soda?!

Question:

No baking soda?

I am making banana bread and have no baking soda or baking powder and I am not old enough to drive and the store is kind of far away. Is there anyway to make the bread withOUT the Baking soda/powder. I know it is used to rise it but does it really need to rise? Please help.

Answers:
You need it unless you make a yeast bread (then you need yeast). Go to the neighbors.

yes definately borrow some from the neighbour--- usually people put baking soda in the fridge to keep it smelling fresh-- look in there-- there might be some

Cream of tarter if not take a jog to the neighbors

All bread needs to rise the backing soda is a must the baking powder is more of a preservative u can go without it but if ur bread can rise you'll end up with a thick pancake that won't cook evenly.

Sadly, there isn't really a good substitute, and, yeah, you need it for banana bread. At least if you want to have anything that approaches "bread" in consistency. Without a leavener, you won't get the little bubbles that emerge during the cooking (instead, you'll get a flat heavy brick).

Baking soda and powder aren't really interchangeable either, although its possible to concoct a sort of "home made" baking powder if you have baking soda and a couple of other ingredients.

Banana bread is referred to as a quick bread. These breads like pancakes, muffins, and biscuits use chemical leaveners, like baking soda, to create carbon dioxide within the mixture. The carbon dioxide is what makes the bread rise and gives bread its distinctive texture.

There is no good substitute for baking soda in a recipe. In a pinch you can substitute baking powder at the ratio of 4 parts baking powder to 1 part baking soda.

Without either baking soda or baking powder, you are better off not making the bread and waiting until you have the proper ingredients.
