How do you know to throw spices away when they have no date?!

Question:

How do you know to throw spices away when they have no date?

when do you throw away cooking spices?

Answers:
Smell them. Rub it between your fingers. If you can't smell anything anymore, toss 'em.

when they no longer have any flavor or taste.

I think 6mo to a year max.

after a year you throw them away

Dried herbs and spices should be replaced every 6 months. You can use them after 6 months however, they loose potency and you need to use more than what the recipe calls for.Save yourself lots of money and keep the bottles and buy your spices from the bulk bins at your grocery store. granulated garlic costs about 50 cents for 2 ounces in bulk, where if you bought a 2 ounce bottle it would cost you about $3.00. Un-opened bottles last longer than 6 months but I only buy what I need.

They change color, paprika for example gets light red. Also check the smell, normally spices are very strong.

If I can't recall the last time I used it, the bottle or can is sticky, and the spice/herb doesn't smell as good as it should, I toss.
I am writing the purchase date with a magic marker on the underside of the container so I never have a doubt again!
