TRADITIONAL meatloaf recipe?!
TRADITIONAL meatloaf recipe?
I just need a traditional meatloaf recipe like my mom makes. When I asked her for it, she said she didn't have one. She just puts stuff in. I know she adds eggs, mustard, ketchup and worschire sauce. All I can find are these wierd ones with pinapple and mushrooms, etc. I just want plain old meatloaf!!
Answers:
1 or 2 lbs. ground beef, prefereably low-fat
1 medium onion or 1TSP onion powder
1medium green pepper
3 eggs
2 cups bread crumbs, salad croutons or crackers( flavored are fine, and please crush the crackers )
Spices as YOU wish to add for flavor
1 envelope Lipton onion-mushroom soup mix
1 cup water
Mix all engredients well; place in whatever baking dish it will fit into-- metal pans bake faster than glass.
Place in a 350 degree oven for about an hour.
Remove from oven and place a slit on the top of the loaf and slather with ketchup, BBQ sauce or your favorite condiment. Place back in oven for 10 to 15 minutes. remove from oven, wait 10 minutes and slice, serve, and enjoy. Yummy, tummy nummy good.
Yes I have a real good one for just plain meat loaf.
The best i have found is on the back of the Lipton onion soup mix. But i don't use the plain onion soup mix i use the beefy onion. Oh and i leave out the ketchup, and use town house crackers instead of bread crumbs. It's so full of flavor!!!
1 pkg. lipton onion soup mix
sprinkle some seasoned bread crumbs
eggs
sprinke some sugar
ketchup
mustard
barbecue sause or A-1 sause
Just ask her what she puts in and about how much. She will probably tell you she puts an egg or two, a squeeze of mustard, etc. Just wing it! After you make it a few times you can adjust it to your own taste. Cooking shouldn't be so uptight. Baking is the only form of cooking that really needs measurements.
ok here are 1460 choices hopefully youll find one like moms, enjoy..http://www.cooks.com/rec/search?q=meatlo...
I dont have one either I just put stuff in. I make two kinds (though we dont eat meatloaf often in our home) One consists of eggs, garlic and onion powder, salt and pepper. Just to taste whatever you perfer. The second is called a bacon cheeseburger meatloaf tastes just like a cheeseburger and my husband loves it and this one is measured out heres the ingerendents
1 pound ground chuck
10 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
1 (8-ounce) package sharp Cheddar, grated
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1/4 cup bread crumbs, toasted
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/3 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons prepared mustard
1 (3-ounce) can French fried onions
In a large bowl, combine the ground chuck and next 8 ingredients, mixing well. In a small bowl, combine the ketchup and mustard. Stir 1/4 cup ketchup mixture into meat mixture, reserving remaining ketchup mixture. Press meat mixture into a 9 by 5 by 3-inch loaf pan, or shape into a loaf and place on a rack in a broiler pan. Spread remaining ketchup mixture over loaf. Bake 40 minutes. Top with French fried onions; bake another 10 to 15 minutes, or until meat is no longer pink.
I got the bacon cheeseburger meatloaf idea from watching Paula Deen its also in one of the cookbooks I have of hers. I think its pretty good but I perfer just plain old eggs-salt-pepper-garlic-onion powder simple can be good too just dont over cook thats what makes meatloaf so gross--over cooking
Meatloaf is one of the many traditional comfort foods. As well, its versatile in style, ingredients and overall taste.
You can use your mother's recipie as a guide to creating one that may be similar. Simply gather the ingredients that she uses and build from it. It may take some time to get the right taste, but its a learning experience. Sometimes we cant quite duplicate a favorite recipe but we can get close to it.

i dont use a recepie for a basic meatloaf either. the eggs help bind it and usually you put either rolled oats or breadcrumbs in it to counter the liquids so it is not so sloppy. grated carrot or potato can be used to give it a moist texture.
Onions help give it flavour as do the sauces...
Experiment! be creative and have fun. and when you come up with something nice. write it down. you can use the recepies you have found to give you an idea of the ratios of eggs to meat for example... and the cooking temp and time.
This is a pretty traditional one with the ketchup topping, which if you don't like, you don't have to do...
Meatloaf
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup chopped yellow onion
1/2 cup chopped celery
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 pound ground pork
2 eggs
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup ketchup
1 1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2/3 cup seasoned bread crumbs
Glaze:
1/2 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons light brown sugar
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Have fun!
It cannot get any easier than this. Get one box of Stove top stuffing (beef flavor). Empty it in a bowl and add about 1 pound of ground beef. Mix together well place in a loaf pan and bake at 350 for about an hour Top with a basic ketchup sauce
I do what they call refrigarator meatloaf. Its probably pretty close to your Moms You just use egg, mayo,or salad dressing ,mustard, ketchup.Anything you like from you frig door. Even ranch or french dressing etc..
Mix this all with Italian bread crumbs and garlic, basil, and onions .Oh yeah don't forget the ground beef! LOL
350 for about 45 min You can also use oatmeal if you like or cracker crumbs.Hope this helps!
Good luck
WOW.I never seen so many differant ways to make meatloaf!
I use two eggs, bread crumb, ketchup, and some milk.
here is the one i learned in home economics class. it is traditional and tasty too.
to 2 lbs of chopped beef add 2 eggs, 1 large chopped onion, 1/2 cup milk, 4 slices of bread cubed, 2 tsps each of catsup, brown mustard, and worstershire sauce.
mix lightly, not too long or it will get tough. place in a loaf pan and bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. then add a small can of tomato sauce and sprinkle with oregano, or instead use a brown gravy, and bake another 15-20 minutes. enjoy!
Here is a very traditional recipe for meatloaf. I think all you would have to add is the mustard and worschire sauce. My husband loves it and he says it tastes like his grandmother's which she was very traditional lol. Hope this helps you =-)
