Put them in the fridge first. Makes you cry less when you cut them. Use a very sharp knife, that will help, too.

I'm a chef,dude

You can fill your sink and cut them under water.

i believe they say to chew gum while you're doing it. There's ton of info.

By buying sweeter onions or even though you would look silly, you can buy lab goggles for about a dollar at Walmart. Hey, onions are painful!

PS- I wouldn't cut under water... there's less friction and you could cut yourself pretty badly.

i would put sunglasses on and it worked!!

Near my wide open kitchen window. That's the only way I can handle them.

make sure your knife is sharp and wet the knife blade

run them under cold water or pop them in the freezer for a few minutes first. calms everything down.

Try to get a pot of cold water, put the whole onion in and add some salt to the water. just let it stay in, soak it for a few mins or even longer then you cut it with a knife and you shouldn't be able to feel any tears or uncomfortable at all.

It works for me.

Try it. It's a old traditional trick.

or you can

Cut the bottom of the onion (where the roots come out) Cut it like a cone out. The diameter of this cone should be about a third of the diameter of the onion, and about 1/3 deep. Take this piece and throw it away. That is the piece that contains glad which makes everyone's eye feel teary and very uncomfortable.

both works

don't cut them in the sink...sinks have germs that's gross....one time i wore ski goggles LOL! if they are cold it's not so bad

Peel them, cut them in half and run cold water over them. Or keep them in the fridge. It seems to help.

soak in water for about few hours bfore u actually cut them!!this really works!try it out!!

Chew gum while cutting onions .. i read abt it in a mag b4 .. hope it helps

Ask your mom???
cut the ends,, peel the shell.,, rinse
Donot open your mouth Slice, chop, or dice
Good luck

soak them in water first and when cutting hold a match in your mouth. NOT LIT!

put them in a cup of water before cutting them, then cut near a sink with running water and an open window, eventually though you just get used to them.

I know this sounds weird But while you are cutting the Onion put a piece of bread in your mouth until you finish cutting the Onion it really does work.

put them in the fridge for about 10 min

The best thing to do is light a scented candle and place it near where you are cutting them. This works and I saw it on the TV channel that has Dinner & A Movie.

"Eye irritation can, therefore, be avoided by cutting onions under running water or submerged in a basin of water. Rinsing the onion and leaving it wet while chopping may also be effective. Chilling or freezing onions prevents the enzymes from activating, limiting the amount of gas generated. Using a sharp blade to chop onions will limit the cell damage and the release of enzymes that drive the irritation response."

Next to the flame of the stove, the flame dissipates the sulfur enzyme the cut onion releases

Contrary to what Rachel Ray says, YES, there is a way.

It's too simple...just breath through your mouth instead of your nose.

You will taste the onion on the roof of your mouth, but it will not make you cry.

I got this tip from Martha Stewart, pre jail days!! Light a small tea light next to the cutting board when i am cutting onions. This way the gas that the onions omit is burned before it reaches my eyes and I don't cry!!

I work in a restaurant and learned a long time ago that if you put a lemon wedge in your mouth and bit down on it it works. I know many of the other answers are less offensive but it does work.

Put them in ice water before you cut them up.I never had a problem but my Mom said that ice water helps...

Wear contact lenses or put a little piece of bread in your mouth while you cut them

Do it while watching a Sienfeld rerun.

Don't have that problem anymore, after finely dicing 100 pounds of onions twice at a restaurant where I used to work I no longer have that problem. I think if you dice them with your mouth open it might help. But a lot of the things I have seen listed here will work. You just need to try different things till you find what works best for you.
