Does food coloring go bad?!

Question:

Does food coloring go bad?

Our mother-in-law has an old box of food coloring; can food coloring go bad? Can you get sick from it? I wouldn't think anything could escape the power of intropy.

Answers:
Food coloring doesn't spoil in the way that food does (there's nothing there to rot) but like most liquids, if it's an open container stored at room temperature, and if there is *any* chance that food got into the container, you can eventually get a nice colony of bacteria. How old is the food coloring, and how long has it been open? When in doubt, throw it out. Food coloring really isn't expensive.

If it still has the original color then it is good.

It doesn't go bad, it just dries up and gets hard to squeeze out of the little bottles. You won't get sick from it, though.

i have never seen it go bad and i have been cooking for 50 years
