How do I make basic french toast?
Answers:
Crack an egg into a shallow bowl -- about 1 egg for two pieces of bread. Add a tablespoon or so of milk. Mix it all up, dip both sides of the bread in the egg mixture and add to frying pan. Fry until both sides are lightly browned. You can add a smidge of butter to the pan to help make the frying go more smoothly.
crack eggs, put them in a bowl, scramble them, dip bread in the eggs, then fry the bread.

2 eggs and smidgen of milk pureed or scrambled, then dip or soak bread in it and put it in the pan to cook like a pancake and watching it does not burn. Some people add cinnamon to it.
Crack 2 eggs into a small bowl.
Add a dash of milk and a teaspoon of vanilla if you want.
Whip mixture together w/ fork to form soft yellow color
Dip bread into mixture in bowl.
Lay bread on warm, greased frying pan. Flip as desired.

most importantly, put syrup or cinnamon sugar on it!

Take a couple of eggs, add milk, beat it together, and soak the bread in the milk/egg combination for a few minutes. Then put some butter in the pan and wait till the pan gets hot. Put the very wet soaked bread on the hot frying pan and let it cook till it turns golden brown, then put another little bit of butter on the bread and flip it. Let that side get golden brown. Serve with syrup. Some people sprinkle with powdered sugar. Another interesting alternative, is to freeze the Italian bread that you get when you get take-out from an Italian restaurant...cut it when it's frozen, and soak that instead of regular bread. It defrosts as it soaks, and it is really good!).

Slice baguette into 1 inch pieces. Set aside.
In wide, shallow bowl, whisk eggs, adding in milk, vanilla, then cinnamon.
Dip each slice bread in egg mixture, thoroughly coating.
Cook each piece in a well-oiled frying pan until light, golden brown.
Butter well, then drizzle with maple syrup.
Tres bien!
Everyone else is recommending that you use more eggs than milk in the egg/milk mixture, but I find that this makes the french toast taste really egg, as if you fried bread in eggs. The smell of the excessive amount of eggs is nauseating to me, so I prefer to use either equal amounts of egg and milk or a little bit more milk than egg. Here is my recipe:
-non stick spray
-6 pieces of large sliced bread (my preference is a sturdy bread like potato bread. It is wider and doesn't fall apart).
-4 large or 5 small eggs
-1 can of evaporated milk (it makes the french toast taste even better)
-1 or 2 pinches of cinnamon
-several teaspoons of confectioners/powdered sugar
-maple syrup
Spray a non-stick Teflon frying pan with non-stick spray (or you could use butter, but this can burn easily) and turn the heat to medium.
In a wide bowl, mix the eggs, evaporated milk and cinnamon. Beat the mixture for about a minute. Place a piece of bread in the mixture for 30 seconds then flip to the other side. Let the other side soak for about 30 seconds to a minute. When the pan is warm (but not too hot), put the french toast in.
Depending on the size of the pan you may be able to cook more than one slice at a time. Remember to keep the heat relatively low (or you may end up burning your toast and it will be raw on the inside). Cook the toast for a few minutes on each side (or until each side is golden brown). Beat the mixture occasionally so all the cinnamon doesn't end up only on the first few pieces of french toast.
When they are finished, you should serve them as soon as possible, but if you are making a lot of these, then your best bet is to put a casserole dish in the oven, turn the oven to about 200 degrees and put the toast in there so it doesn't get cold. Remember to remove the dish with gloves as it will be hot.
Sprinkle powdered sugar on the top and serve with maple syrup.

I like to make mine with eggs, a little vanilla, cinnamon, a little brown sugar, and syrup added to the mix. Scramble up and dip bread. When I first put it in the pan I sprinkle a little of the brown sugar on top to make it crispy. It is so yummy!!
crack 2 eggs, put them in a bowl, scramble them, dip bread in the eggs, then fry the bread, fry until its golden brown
If you have more of a savoury rather than sweet tooth, use the basic 1 egg little bit of milk per two slices of bread mix. Add some mixed herbs, salt and pepper put in the frypan cooked both sides golden brown. Slap em on a plate with a little BBQ sauce. Big glass of OJ to wash it down and youv'e got a simple tasty breakfast.
