Yeast in bread...?!
Yeast in bread...?
Does all bread (ie. loaf bread, pita breads, flat breads etc.) contain yeast? I have to avoid yeast, and I am wondering if there are any breads I can still have? I looooove bread!

btw, I am avoiding yeast because I am breastfeeding and my daughter has developed a very sniffly nose which is not clearing up on it's own. It may be that she is reacting to foods which I am eating and is passing through my breastmilk. I have been advised by my doctor to try avoiding bread (because of the yeast) for a week or so to see if this has an effect. So it is not an issue if it is in the air, and I am not drinking beer anyway :-)

Quick breads are made with baking powder instead of yeast. Flatbreads (unleavened) and short breads have no yeast or baking powder. If you are making your own, the recipe will call for baking powder or baking soda (example, cranberry nut bread, baking powder biscuits). If you are buying, read the labels.
"Recipes for a Small Planet" by Ellen Ewald has some great quick breads such as "Casserolls" and whole wheat yogurt bread, if you get tired of flavored quick breads like pumpkin or zucchini bread.
Loaf breads have yeast
flatbreads are flat because........no yeast to make them rise.
It would be wise to check the label of any and breads before planing to use it in a meal, or eat it as a snack. I was surprised to find out how many breads including pizza dough,
contain yeast! And don't forget only cake donuts, as glazed donuts contain yeast also. (Check the labels on anything containing flour for yeast content!)
Some flat read would have yeast too. It just doesn't rise that much. Store bought properly use yeast, but You can use baking soda or baking powder to make bread. It won't taste as good though/
Yes, all leavened bakery products are made with yeast- including the flat breads like pita. However, the yeast which does the leavening is killed in the baking and cooking process, and none remains behind in the cooked product. I'm not sure why you have to avoid yeast, nor how you could do it. Yeast exists in the air around us, all over the world, well- except for Antartica anyway. Yeast is what gives us beer and wine both, as well. The only baked products you could have would be crackers, tortillas, and cakes/cookies, which are either unleavened entirely or made with baking powder or soda.
Paul's Yeast Free, Gluten Free Bread is available. My mother swears by it. It costs about £1.50 per loaf and is available in some of the independent health food shops. Hope this is of help.
Flat breads by their very nature do not contain yeast. Matzos do not either - infact any "unleavened" breads are yeast free.
Good luck.
