Why are grandmas so good at cooking?


Answers:
I think that it was due to the war and the privations and scarcity of food - The mothers in those days learnt to use food that was - fresh, in season, good value for money and was nutritious. There were almost no convenience foods only tinned or bottled produce.The cooks then were never wasteful like we are today and weould have been awed by the amount of food we waste and throw away!
Most of them were fulltime wives and mothers and loved to spend there days making homemade preserves, bottling fruit, growing their own vegetables and teaching their children how to cook - there was a pride in producing a meal for the hardworking breadwinner that we just do not have today
They say that necessity is the mother of invention - and I can honestly say that the times when I have cooked the best meals wre when I had very little money and had to be very inventive!

Grandma's are good at cooking because they are old and have soo much wisdom and from the old days they have recipes always thank her for her good meal.

Practice makes perfect, all those years of cooking and remember that back in the day they used more simple ingredients to cook (which worked better).

Lots of experience and they aren't concerned about the "bad" ingredients that all of us (not) so younger people worry about.

When grand ma's grew up they actually stayed at home and cooked for their families on a daily basis. It was part of a women's worth to be able to cook well. Its not good or bad that the family structure doesn't ask for this any more, but I bet thats part of the reason.

God gave them the love of really having food at all.
and a husband who taught them how ""Grandpa's like me."

grandma always puts love into what they cook they learned from there mothers and grand mothers plus along the way they have expermited some were good some were bad and with all those years of expermiting shes a good cook go into her kitchen and ask if you can help and you to one day will be a good cook

Love and experience and absolutely in that order.First they love us so much and know us so well that we can sometimes get custom cuisine....if you were especially good.
Second they've done so much cooking over the years that these are our real experts in the kitchen.The happiness they get from seeng that Thanksgiving table full of loved ones and when everyone is full and happy they look around and see empty bowls,platters etc. That's their joy.

They are old school & don't mess around when it comes to throwing down in the kitchen! I think also the practice, and the love they put into it helps too! Even though my grandmother have passed, I can still taste some of their cooking.

while growing up we lived on a farm .a great deal of our meat and produce was grown and then canned or frozen.
My mother was a farm cook .meaning she made everything from scratch,even the basics that we depend on stores for ,like butter and sour cream. I began to cook at about 9 years old and by 15 was an accomplished cook.when we moved into town and my mother began working, I prepared as many meals as she did.
so i guess the answer is we have lots of practice and grew up in a time and place where it was important to be a good cook. its only in the last 25 years that women have opportunities other than house wife and with the shortage of time and the wide choice of prepared foods there isnt as much emphasis put on learning to cook.
all my kids are learning to cook not just the girls so someday even grampas will be good cooks.
