Are pancakes and grits the same thing?

Bless your heart! You must not be from the South. They are both a Southern food. Grits are based from corn called "hominy". Pancakes are made from a flour batter that is smoothe and semi-thick, and cooked on a hot griddle.
No. Pancakes are large, round, fried mixtures of flour, baking soda and water. They are usually covered with maple syrup and are very sweet. Grits are a ground hominy (or corn meal).
There's nothing quite like grits outside of America... I guess the closest thing would be something similar to cous cous (but grits are finer, and bleached white). They are usually served as a side dish and accompany some savory meal such as fish, or eggs.
No. grits are more like a cooked cereal.

These are grits, grits are made from the milling of corn kernels. They're made into a cooked cereal. http://whatscookingamerica.net/history/g...
And these are pancakes. A batter is made and poured onto a hot surface and cooked on either sides into a flat cake. http://www.catheroo.com/images/photos/pa...
No.
No, I thought grits were chopped up cubes of fried potato, I had them in NY for breakfast nearly everyday...
grits: a ground, usually white meal of dried and hulled corn kernels that is boiled and served as a breakfast food or side dish. I usually buy instant grits to which I just add boiling water, butter; sometimes I add bacon bits &/or cheese. I usually do not have toast or biscuits whenever I have grits with my breakfast of eggs and coffee.
pancake: a thin cake made of batter that is poured onto a hot, greased surface and cooked on both sides until brown; traditionally wheat flour was used.
Pancakes:
Beat well: 1 egg
Beat in: 1 1/4 cup sweet milk
Beat in: 1 1/4 cup sifted plain white flour, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, 2 tablespoons soft shortening, 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Bake or fry in greased pan until golden brown on both sides..
Yield: 16-4 inch pancakes.
Serve with favorite pancake syrup, other toppings, butter, powdered sugar, whipped cream fruit, nuts. Use your imagination.
Pan cakes are made in a pan... they are sort of crepe... They are a nearly flat and round bread. We usually put a sweet syrup & butter on them.
Grits is a corn meal.... sometimes watery sometimes thicker. The northern Italian eat something simular and it's called "polenta".
