How do you stop the crust from softening on bread?!

Question:

How do you stop the crust from softening on bread?

Hi. I have a breadmaker and make great bread, and when the bread is just cooked the crust is nice and....crusty! However, when I store the bread it then goes soft which I don't like. I store it in plastic bags. Is there anything else I can store it in which will stop the crusts from going soft? Thanks.

This is just a guess but it might work.

Try letting it sit out longer before wrapping or put it in a paper bag. I think when you put the bread in an airtight bag the moisture that is still inside will soak out into the crust making it go soft. Good European-style bakers have their crusty bread laying out in the shop.

Let me know how it turns out.

no, i think the only way to freshen up a loaf is to bake it again.

I use a big tupperware container for my bread...keeps it fresh without the bag shoggys..
