Depending on how many donuts you want 1 pkg. buttermilk biscuits makes 10 donuts. Really easy, but I have listed several hints that make it work better for me. If you have any to add please let me know!
Buttermilk Biscuits the pop open the can, and the dough is all there kind.
Heat vegetable oil to 375 degrees. Make donut holes. Gently slide "donut" in, let cook, flip and you are done. You can make several at a time.
HINTS
To make donut holes, I take the "bulb" off the baster and use the baster to make the donut holes (don't use the baster much otherwise)
I prefer my electric fry pan for this but on the stove in a heavy dutch oven works too.
I will put the donut on a slotted spoon and place it in the hot oil letting it float off the spoon, this helps to prevent burnt fingers!
Having the donuts warm up to room temperature before cooking gives you lighter donuts and doesn't chill the oil as much when you put them in. which in turn gives you faster more even cooking.
TOPPINGS AND GLAZES
Mix cinnamon & sugar. For a cinnamon sugar donut.
Mix powdered sugar with lemon juice and lemon or orange peel for Citrus glaze.
Powdered sugar, cocoa, and milk make chocolate glaze
Whenever you what to make a glaze the humidity in your home will affect it. So I just put a few spoons of powdered sugar in a small soup bowl, and start adding my liquid in drops. Okay the first few are really big drops!
I use Watkins Cinnamon (no fillers, tastes better) and Cocoa for this!
Great camping recipe, No grease spatters on my counter top!
Best Homemade Doughnuts
Canned bisquits (any kind will work)
Oil for frying
About 2 cups Powdered Sugar
Lay out canned bisquits on to a lightly greased cutting board or countertop. Gently roll out bisquits to about 1/2 inch or so.
Use a small round cookie cutter about an 1-inch in diameter (or I use an empty plastic 35mm film container) and cut out center of each bisquit. Place dough-nuts and holes in oil that is about 350 degrees F. Fry for about 2 minutes (or until lightly brown) and then turn over and cook an additional 2 minutes.
Place fried bisquits on a layer of paper towels and allow to cool for about 5 minutes.
Place cooled doughnuts and about 2 cups of powdered sugar in a gallon sized plastic ziploc bag and gently shake to coat the dough-nuts.
Take dough-nuts out of bag and place on a platter, then serve and run because they will want more!
