French toast?!

Question:

French toast?

I tried making French toast for the first time the other day. I made a mixture of egg, milk, salt and pepper, dipped the bread into it and put the bread onto the frying pan (which had cooking oil on it). Each time, I was left with big white eggy stains on the toast. Am I doing this right?

Answers:
I presume you've done the savoury version of French Toast...I have got the sweeter version!

French Toast

Ingredients
12 Thick Sliced Bread
1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
3 whole Eggs
1/8 teaspoon Salt
1 1/3 cups Milk
1 1/2 teaspoon Brown sugar or vanilla sugar
1/2 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
2 tablespoon Butter for pan
1/2 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg (optional)

Directions
1.Combine and beat together egg, sugar, milk, salt, desired spices, and vanilla.
2. Heat a lightly buttered griddle or skillet over medium-high.
3. Dunk each slice of bread in egg mixture, soaking both sides.
4. Place in skillet or griddle and cook on both sides until golden.

Serve hot with:
Pure Maple Syrup
or Powdered Sugar
or Favorite Jam

The Savoury Version

Ingredients

1 egg
2 teaspoons milk
2 slices of bread
Method

1. Heat a small amount of margarine or butter in a frypan.
2. Beat the egg and milk together in a shallow bowl.
3. Dip a bread slice in the mixture, thoroughly coating both sides.
4. Allow excess mixture to drain and place bread slice in frying pan.
5. Fry for a few minutes on each side, adding extra butter and margarine if required.
6. Repeat with remaining bread.

Recipe notes

Cut into fingers and serve with tomato sauce or mayonnaise.

When im making french toast, i just soak the bread in the eggs and put them straight in to the fryin pan. I dont use cooking oil and they always come out fine.

Yeah, that's the right recipe for making french toast. Was the oil hot enough? Make sure you really soak the bread in the egg so it's really soggy, otherwise you just end up with fried bread.

No milk, just use well beaten eggs. Make sure the oil in your frying pan is very hot before you put the bread on (a griddle pan is better than a frying pan) and it should work for you.

Yes but it is better to use butter instead of oil and instead of salt and pepper use some cinammon and cook unitl golden brown. You will still tee some of the white eggy stain.
The cinammon and butter (I recommend real butter, not margarine) gives it a great flavor. Good Luck!
Oh, just mix the cinammon in the egg mixture.

I use egg,milk and cinnamon.
The trick is to have the oil very hot before putting the bread in and to use vegetable oil.
If your oil is really hot you will not have the results you did but get nicely browned french toast.
Hope this helps.

Oh, do I have an awesome receipe for French Toast!! Mix eggs, milk, and a small amount of French Vanilla or Vanilla Caramel liquid coffee creamer together WELL ( to avoid the egg clumps). Dip your bread in it and grill.

Yummmmmmyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!

For every whole egg add about 3 tablespoons of milk, 1 teaspoon of sugar and just barely a pinch of salt and you can eventually use vanilla extract or scrape a bit of vanilla bean. Beat the mixture and dip sliced day-old bread , let it soak up the mixture, and then fry it in fat (not smoking-hot) like butter.
Serve with a pat of butter and maple syrup or bacon eggs or whatever you want. It should look an appetizing golden brown.

I beat eggs, add a wee splash of milk (not much at all) and then soak pieces of cut up baguette in it. Make sure the oil in your pan is really nice and hot and drain the french toast on kitchen paper after...

Maybe you are not letting your egg soak into your bread enough? or the oil is not hot enough? or you have not beaten the eggs enough? These are the most likely explanations for it turning out like you describe...

I beat the eggs WELL and add cinnamon and vanilla then I use the Cooking spray (Pam -butter) and Let them absorb then when they cook they will be fluffy too and they taste good. you also need to let some of the eggs drip off because once it soaks in there is some on the inside. so before putting it on the pan let some of your egg drip off.

Beat the eggs a lettle more to disapate the albumen

1st..wee bit more milk...beat a little more...exchange cinnamon for salt and pepper...and most importantly...DRY the bread first... I let mine set out for at least an hour before hand so it soaks up the batter.

Maybe you didnt mix the egg enough so the yolk and white part of the egg are still seperate =)

This used to happen to me, it's because you're not beating the egg well enough. Make sure the eggs are properly beated next time and you shouldn't have a problem! Good luck!

I use egg, milk, cinnamon, sugar, a little vanilla and a little apple butter if i don't have the apple butter i have used apple sauce. the apple butter is my secret ingredient. just make sure you have the pan hot enough and use a little real butter in the bottom of the pan not oil. also make sure you have the mixture well mixed, i give it a little mix before i put each piece of bread in. my kids and hubby go crazy for my french toast. Good luck!

I only use beaten egg alone. Make sure the oil is hot enough also. then just add a little bit of salt and pepper after cooking. Good luck!

try 2 eggs, about 1/4 cup of milk....cinnamon and sugar a little vanilla extract.....no salt or pepper for god's sake.....lol.....mix until blended totally.......dip bread in and cook in a fry pan....use margarine or butter, but margarine will work best....not oil yuck..
