How thick should cake batter be?!

Question:

How thick should cake batter be?

Answers:
not runny, but not like oatmeal either. a happy medium should do.

moderate.

If it's from a mix, then it should be fairly thin. If you made it from scratch, it depends.

Similar to a medium pancake mixture.

It really depends on what type of cake you're making. If it's a cake mix from a box, it should be thin enough to pour, but not soupy--you should pour it then have to spread it in the pan with a rubber scraper.

If it's a from-scratch cake or a mix that has something with solid ingredients in it (chocolate chips, apples, etc.) it should be considerably thicker. (Example: I have a recipe for a fresh apple cake that has such a stiff batter, I can't stir it with a spoon--I have to use my stand mixer!)

Different cakes use different amounts of water, just follow the directions and it will come out. Some even tell you how long to use the mixer.hope this helps.

Recipes vary, but usually it should be thick enough that if you dunk a spoon into the batter and hold it over the bowl of batter, it should make "ribbons" before blending with the rest of the batter in the bowl.
