Onions for a barbecue?

I am having a barbecue at a dog show I am organising and don't fancy preparing all those onions to go with the burgers and the sausages. Does anyone know where they can be bought already prepared, I had a feeling you could buy them frozen. 10 points await the answer with the right info. I live in east sussex UK

Do you have a Makro account or know someone who does? They wholesale a lot of catering goods so I'd expect prepared onions would be one of them. It would also be a lot cheaper than buying them in a 'normal' supermarket.

Or a local fruit and veg wholesaler? Mine does sliced onions for £1.75 a kilo (just looked at their price list!)

Do they sell B&G Products in the UK? They make a prepared onion in a jar that works great for Bar B Que.

you can buy bags of chopped onions from the veggie section of Sainsburys

Don't know about the UK, but in Oz you can pick them up in any supermarket freezer.

Tesco do packs of ready sliced onions in the chilled fruit and veg section with other pre-packed stuff. Good luck - perhaps you can order in advance?

i guess you won't appreciate jokes about hotdogs.

most large supermarkets sell pre-cooked onion, normally in the freezer section. the fancy supermarkets will probably have prepared onion in fancy packaging with a posh name.

Why don't you just leave the onions out, no one is gonna be too bothered and it saves you a lot of trouble and money,

Leave the onions whole with skin on, Drizzle lightly with oil and put them straight on the bbq. You can eat the skin or the skin can be removed easily.

You could buy them and pay a neighbor to cut them all up for you and place them in the bags.

I"ll give you a quick and easy way to fix whole onions on the
BBQ: You take whole onions(amount according to people),
skin them, and cut the tops off. Take a piece of aluminum foil, place the onions on top,add butter and salt/black pepper
to the onions, and close up the foil. They can be cooked right
along with your other food on the grill.

If you mean chopped onions, the supermarkets sell them packaged in the frozen section - but they are more expensive. You could peel the onions & run them through a food processor & bag/freeze them yourself - less costly.

If you mean prepared onions, the market sells already breaded onion rings in the freezer section. Follow the pkg directions, i.e. bake etc.

You can also prepare the onions on the bbq:


Char Roasted Rosemary Onions
Serving Size : 4

4 unpeeled large yellow or red onions
2 tbsp red wine or sherry vinegar
1 tbsp olive oil
salt, black pepper
1 tsp finely chopped fresh rosemary
2 tbsp olive oil to drizzle
1/2 tbsp fresh rosemary leaves

Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).

Put 5 tbsp vinegar in a shallow dish just wide enough to fit 4 breast halves. Add the duck breast halves, skin side up. Cut onions in half from top to bottom. Trim and peel each onion half, leaving the root end attached to allow the onion halves to stay intact when cooking. Arrange onion halves on an oven tray, cut side up. Sprinkle evenly with vinegar, oil, salt, pepper and chopped rosemary. Cover with foil and pre-roast for 30 minutes. Grill according to instructions below. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with rosemary leaves. Serve hot.

Outdoor on the barbecue: Grill over medium-hot coals until lightly charred, 5 minutes per side.

Indoor: Preheat broiler. Broil until lightly charred, 5 minutes per side.

Think ahead:Pre-roast onions in oven up to 1 day in advance. Cover and store at room temperature.

if they don't have onions already chopped, you may have to do them yourself. just buy one of those choppers that do all the work for you.

If you have a Chinese supermarket nearby they sell them in big bags.
