I'm making coleslaw. Do you think salad dressing or mayo is better in coleslaw?
I'm using it on hotdogs. I was just going to use salad dressing, sugar, a very small amount of onion, and cider vinegar. Do you have a better recipe?
Answers: You've got a good recipe! But you might find that the salad dressing provides lots of sweetness on its own, so go very light on the sugar. If you want to use sugar, maybe consider mayo instead. Use just enough cider vinegar to make it a pourable mixture. Taste it first before adding it to the slaw. When you say "YUM" you'll know it's right. mayo miracle whip its zesty and sweet. my stepsis uses white cabbage and purple cabbage, mayo and salt and pepper...very simple, very crunchy and quite good. Episode: Salad Daze II: The Long Arm of the Slaw
1/2 head green cabbage, thinly sliced
1/2 head red cabbage, thinly sliced
1 carrot, thinly sliced
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 fluid ounces plain yogurt
2 fluid ounces mayonnaise
1 tablespoon pickle juice
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon chives, chopped
Kosher salt, as needed
1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
Generously salt the cabbage and drain in colander for 3 hours. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
In a separate bowl, combine all of the ingredients except the cabbage and carrot. Whisk to combine evenly. Toss the cabbage and carrot with the dressing. With all respect, if you are using salad dressing, you are not "making" the cole slaw! Some mayo, a little mustard powder, salt, pepper, maybe a shot of vinegar. Mess around with it. I'm sure you can do better than a bottle of dressing! Mayonnaise contains whole eggs, so I would say your coleslaw dressing is better and healthier than Mayo. Salad dressing ( Miracle Whip) is very tasty and seasonings are less needed to enhance the flavor of the coleslaw. I like dressing because of the spices. More flavor. Well when I was working in the restaurant business I know there were many recipes but the most common one is cabbage, carrot, sugar and salad dressing any brand will do!! I use 1 heat of cabbage, shredded carrots, 2T minced onions, 1/3 C sugar, salt and pepper, 1/4 C milk, 1/2 cup mayo, 1/4 C buttermilk, 1 1/2 T vinegar, 2 T lemon Juice, mix it together and refrigerate overnight.
