Answers: Sunny A has it pretty much right in that the British scone and American biscuit are close enough to be interchangeable. A british scone could be eaten with southern fried chicken in the UK and a US biscuit sould be eaten with butter and jam in the US (or I suppose I should really say jelly).... however I find that suggesting scone with chicken tends to repulse on this side of the atlantic the same way as biscuit with butter and jam/jelly does on the US side. Having lived in both the US and UK I can go with either. Source(s):
Born and living in UK, but lived US for 2 years a biscuit is a light and fluffy buttery baked bread. It is round, about 1 1.5 inches thick and about 2 inches in diameter. Here is a recipe for you:
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups all-purpose flour, stirred before measuring*
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup lard or vegetable shortening, chilled
2 tablespoons butter, chilled
3/4 cup buttermilk
PREPARATION:
Heat oven to 450°. Adjust oven rack to center position.
In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, soda, and salt. Cut in chilled shortening and butter until you have pieces the size of small peas.
Make a well in center of dry ingredients; pour in buttermilk. With a wooden spoon, gently blend dry ingredients into the buttermilk, just until mixture is clumping together. If necessary, add a few more teaspoons of buttermilk.
Transfer dough to a lightly floured board. Pat out in a circle about 8 inches in diameter and 1/2-inch thick. Using a 2 1/2 to 3-inch biscuit cutter, cut out and place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake on center oven rack for about 10 to 12 minutes, until tops are browned.
Makes 10 to 12 biscuits, depending on size of cutter.
* by a biscuit cutter, it means a round metal cutter An American biscuit is a British scone.

Try replacing the milk with buttermilk.
Enjoy warm from the oven, split, spread with strawberry jam and clotted or whipped cream and a strong pot of tea at five p.m. (seriously, it's called five o'clock tea). Meggy has it right on the money. We eat our biscuits with fried chicken, steak, with sausage gravy poured on top of them. They are the best when you put butter and honey on them! You should try KFC...they have the best chicken and biscuits!!
If you can buy Bisquick in the UK it will tell you how to make them or you can go to this site:
www.bisquick.com It's like a scone w/out the sugar. Very tasty with ham and marmalade on it...There are several ways to make it but if you can buy self-rising flour (flour with baking powder/soda mixed in it already), there's probably an easy recipe for biscuits on the back.
