Do buttermilk and butter different?!

Question:

Do buttermilk and butter different?

i always watching this martha stewart show. lot of her recipies like cakes and pancakes use buttermilk and i have no idea what is buttermilk. any suggestion on what can i use to replace buttermilk because maybe i won't find it where i live now.

Answers: Most stores carry buttermilk. It is just milk that has been soured. In the past, it was the liquid left over after making butter. But you can make a great substitute at home by simply adding 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to one cup of milk. I have done this in a pinch a few times before. It's the liquid left after making butter. It's usually in the dairy case near the milk. If not, you can buy it powdered in the baking section of many groceries or in a restaurant supply store.
