What's the best way to handle flare- ups on the grill?
i made hamburgers and the grease dripped down causing huge flare ups at times.....do you use water? just let the grease burn off and move the meat? Thanks.
Answers: Try moving the burgers as infrequently as possible. Just flip it once and don't press it down. The more you move, the more the fat drips down and flares up. Also using ground beef with less fat content will reduce flare-ups as it's the fat that catches fire. A small amount of flare-up is good though, it adds great flavor to the burger. Source(s):
I'm a food and wine consultant If you are using a charcoal grill then a small fan on the side of the grill will keep flare-ups at a minimum and also keep a consistent temperature.
In my experience, on a gas grill, you don't get big flare-ups. If you get a big, huge flare-up then that might mean that there is a problem, and it would be smart to turn off the gas. I use water I put into a spray bottle. Spray some water into the flare up. Some people swear by Flare-up flavor. Do no, do not move the meat. You'll just tear the burger. Also do not press the patty flat with your spatula, you'll cause a flare up. Keep your grill clean between grilling too. if you're using a charcoal gril try splashing a little beer on to douse down the flames, the alcohol burns right off but the flavour really comes through.
