The first thing is: do they have a pet? Try to Include the pet in your thoughtful gift basket with a mind to safety and health to the pet--even if it is just a card from you that you've included them in your thoughts.
A days' drive for perishables: a guality cooler and ice!
1) Quick breads are wonderful and your friend can freeze them, if need be. (If you can't use your oven this time of year to bake them either from scratch or from a box, check out a good bakery). You can wrap them in plain or colored cellowrap tied with a ribbon or raffia--and maybe a cinammon stick in the knot!
2) Is she a candle person? The sky's the limit these days.
3) Are baths a relaxing ritual for her? Salts, oils, candles, wine, tea....
4) A basket of food ingredients with a "gift certificate," offering your services to whip it together while you are visiting her...for a brunch, dinner or sweet treat.
5) If she cooks and you know her preferences, bottled sauces, condiments and wines/beers from your own local region. (If she is at least interested in cooking, you can include recipe cards from trusted friends, books or websites.)
6) Hobbies? If so, tuck in a few tricks of her "trade."
7) Would a trip to the bookstore be worthwhile to tuck in the gift basket?
8) Of course, having a person who wants to do something special and travel a day for a visit is gift enough.
