***This is a Christmas recipe but should work in your case:
Your Favorite Cake Mix
2 Tubs of Cream Cheese Icing
Marzipan
Yellow & Red Food Dye
White Food Dye
Paring Knife or Angel Cookie Cutter
Piping bag
#4 Icing Tip
2 round cake pans
Powder Sugar
Angel Cookie cutter (small one)
Food coloring
Edible gold dust
Start out by baking your cake mix in two round baking pans. Just follow the direction the back of the box as usual.
Once the cakes have cooled you should apply a thin layer of icing to them. Simply set the first piece on your cake platter. Slather a nice ? inch thick layer of icing on top. Then place the second piece on top. Now, spread the thin layer of icing around the entire cake.
Set you cake in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Once you cake has chilled then apply one nice thick later of the cream cheese icing again. Make it as smooth as possible. Be sure to save at least ? of one of the tubs of cream cheese icing for decoration later.
You could also add a layer of fondant icing if you like working with that product. If you are unfamiliar with fondant icing you can simply buy it in the baking store or in some arts and crafts stores. It rolls out very similar to play dough. You would lay it over the cake, drape it down the sides, and trim off the excess with you paring knife.
Now, whichever icing you choose you now have a smooth perfectly white cake.
Fill your icing bag with the remaining cream cheese icing. Use the number four tip to pipe a very sweet scallop edge along the border of the top of the cake. Simply start at any point on the circle. Place your tip about ? inch in from the edge. Work a half circle with the outside of the circle touching the outside of the cake. Repeat this scallop over and over until the circle is complete. You could also go back and make one little pearl like dollop at each point.
Now, break off about 16 ounces of your marzipan. Blend it with enough white food coloring to make it a beautiful white color. Use your rolling pin to roll it out to a 1/8 inch slab. You can trace out a an angel shape with your knife point and then cut it out or simple press the shape out with a small angel cookie cutter.
Place your angels along the edge of the cake, like they are holding hands. They should all be pointing in towards the middle and touching. Their feet should be along the outer edge of the Christmas cake.
Now, add a drop of yellow and red food coloring to a tiny piece of marzipan, maybe four to six ounces again. Roll the dough out with your rolling pin again. Cut out small circles for the faces. Press them into place on the angel cookie cutter shapes you already applied to the cake.
***Here is another idea:
Make an Angel shape cake. Bake a small cake round and a large cake round. The small cake round is the head. From the large cake round cut a triangle piece in center. The triangle piece is the Angel's gown and the 2 side pieces turned sideways become the Angel's wings. Ice and decorate.
