What is shepered's pie (I know it's food but details)?!

Question:

What is shepered's pie (I know it's food but details)?

I don't think I've had it before and I'm what you Brits call a "Yank" or American so can you tell me?

Answers:

Originally made with lamb, sometimes with beef. Ultimately, you could use any meat you desired. I'm a yank as well, and Shep's pie is one of my favs. Here's my ingredients (I go for tasty and quick):
1.5lbs ground beef (sorry Brits!) I use Quorn veggie crumbles now, as I'm vegetarian.
8 oz corn
8 oz lima beans
10-14 oz tomato sauce
sharp cheddar cheese (1/4 inch thick)
1 medium onion, chopped and sauteed
homemade mashed potatoes

1. Cook ground beef and drain
2. Mix all vegetables and beef together, slowly start adding tomato sauce (you don't want your mixture to be too moist or it will be soupy)
3. Spread into casserole dish in an even layer
4. Layer cheddar cheese on top of filling
5. Spread mash potatoes over dish (think icing a cake)
6. Cook at 325-350 for about 20 minutes, or long enough for the potatoes to turn a little golden and crispy (like meringue)

It's really tasty, and you can basically use whatever vegetables you prefer.

Again Brits, sorry for bastardizing this wonderful dish, but it really is good....and quick and easy.
