Does cooking milk, say in soup, extend the expiration date?
I've always wondered if you use milk in a recipe that is not baked, does this affect the expiration date?
I used milk in a frozen soup the day before the milk expired. Will the milk last longer after being cooked?
Answers:
Yes in this instance it will. By cooking the milk you have killed any bacteria that might have been present. Thus extending the life of the milk. But, if the milk had "turned" before you cooked it, it would have made no difference. This is because the bacteria present have defecated toxins that will not cook out. Toxic compounds that will remain in the milk regardless of cooking. Also, did you know that you can freeze milk? This will make it last for months!
