Cake dilema for topsy turvy cake?!

Question:

Cake dilema for topsy turvy cake?

I want to make a topsy turvy cake also called mad hatter cake, usually it's done with sizes ranging from 12 to 6 inch pans...my question is this: i want to make it a bit smaller but still want to keep the 3 tiers, do you think it would still be strong enough if i started the cake like this:
base
bottom would be a 6', then a 7' then a 8'
middle
bottom would be a 5', then 6', then 7'
top
bottom would be 4', then 5', then 6'
putting wood dowels and cake boards inbetween the tiers...any suggestions would be great :)

here is web site that shows you the step by step instructions...I don't see why your smaller cake sizes would not work.....sounds fun, good luck
