Can I put uncooked brown rice in a crockpot?
Will it cook right? How long will I need to cook it in the crockpot?

I don't think this is the best use for your crockpot. I've tried everything, but as nice as it would be to start the rice cooking and walk away, I just don't think it works--with brown rice especially, you just can't go very far away from the stove during cooking. I've tried every method out there, and what works the best for me is to cook it as though you were cooking pasta, in a great big pot of salted boiling water. It will need at least 40 minutes to cook, and may take closer to an hour, but as with pasta, you can taste it as you go along to see if it's as tender as you want it. Then drain it (leave it in the colander for at least 5 minutes, because all those grains take a long time to drain, and also because cooked rice holds heat for quite a while). Put it into a warm dish/serving bowl/whatever (just run it under the hot water faucet and dry it off). Put a paper or clean dish towel over the top and a pan lid or baking sheet over that, then let it rest 5 more minutes. The steam from the rice will be absorbed by the towel, so your rice will be fluffy, not soggy. I know it's fussy, but my rice always comes out just right this way, and this is one task the crock-pot just isn't up to.
By the way, have you ever tried putting the raw rice in a baking pan and dry-toasting it in the oven at 350 until it just barely starts to take on some color? Then you cook it in exactly the same way as above, but when finished, it has a really nice, subtle nutty taste, great in a salad or with a roast. Good luck.
