Answers:
Brown rice is actually rice (maybe Tin Can Sailor is thinking of wild rice, which is a grain and not rice at all). Brown rice is brown because it still has its outer coating of bran, germ, and endosperm (the parts with the fiber, nutrients, and healthy oils) still on it. White rice has been polished so that the oil, which is quick to spoil, comes off. This may be why your brown rice tastes funny -- it may be rancid. Start with a new box, or buy it bulk so you can smell it first. Whatever you have left over, you can store in the freezer. If you keep it at room temperature, it will spoil within a few months.
The other suggestions for cooking are great -- just wanted to be sure you're not trying to improve something that's beyond saving.
Enjoy!
