Will someone please define 'panini'?!

Question:

Will someone please define 'panini'?

I thought it took a particular loaf-style of bread, and had to be made using a grooved panini grill that your pressed down on the loaf. But right now they are making at a cafe near me a 'ham and cheese panini' using regular sliced white bread on a standard flat grill. Is this bogus, or do I get to call my next grilled cheese sandwich a 'cheese panini'?

Update: I just went to Google translator, which interprets 'panini' from Italian to English as 'sandwiches'. Boo!

Answers:

'panini' is an Italian word which means 'rolls' - it doesn't matter if they are toasted and if they are stuffed with something, it just means rolls, trust me. The industry always use Italian or French words to make its products sound more verosimile.
