How do you boil a hot dog?

I know that you boil the water then put them in but how long does it usually take and how do you know they are done?

I love this question. its one of the trick question that gets you sent to the end of the lunch line at culinary school if you don't know the answer. First by definition a hot dog is all ready cooked before packaging. Being pre-cooked your not cooking it merely re-heating it. By FDA standards precooked food must be heated to 165F. Anything else is for taste or color. Water boils at 212F and will bring a hot dog to acceptable reheat temp in just 4-5 minutes. Remember also your just reheating it. So when it gets hot enough to your liking its ready to eat cold, hot, or otherwise.
