Help with custard making?!

Question:

Help with custard making?

Can anyone help me with making custard using milk and some vanilla pods?

I found this recipe where after i add the milk and vanilla to the egg yolks, i was supposed to put the entire mixing bowl over a pot of simmering water. How much water am i supposed to put in the pot? i assume the water is not supposed to touch the bottom of the mixing bowl. Also, does this mean the recipe will only work if i use a metal type mixing bowl? what kind of mixing bowl should i use?

If anyone could also suggest me any other custard recipes it would be awesome.. thx.. =)

Answers:

a metal or glass bowl works well. make sure to put enough water in the pot that it will not boil off to quickly, but do avoid touching the bowl. the idea is the gentle heat will prevent the eggs from cooking. sounds like the recipe is good, anything "easier" will taste like a "Jell-O" mix custard instead.
