Can I substitute something for vegetable shortening?!

Question:

Can I substitute something for vegetable shortening?

I don't have any, if a recipe calls for a 1/4 cup can I use anything as a substitute?

Answers:

You can use butter or margarine in place of vegetable shortening when it calls for 1/4 cup. It may change the flavor and texture a little depending on what you are making but it will be OK. Butter and margarine works great in cookies and cakes. It changes the texture of a pie crust from what vegetable shortening would do but it still works. If you are going to fry something in it then butter and margarine will burn too quickly if you are going to deep-fry.
