Why can't you buy frozen lettuce?
Sometimes I want a salad but I never eat all the lettuce in time so half of it just rots. Why can't they make a frozen salad with lettuce, tomato, onion, shredded carrot, a little cheese, etc.? You would just let it get to room temperature, put on your favorite dressing, a salad-eating hat, and gets to munching!!
Answers:
Freezing destroys the cell struture of lettuce and most other fruits and vegetables making them inedible and not very appealing to the palate.
You could freeze tomatoes for use in cooked dishes, but they are not the same as fresh tomatoes when thawed and will have an unflavorable, watery texture.
Othe foods you don't want to freeze including salad greens are: eggs in the shell, creamed cottage cheese, sour cream, heavy or whipping cream, potatoes, stuffed poultry, fluffy frosting, custard, cream fillings in layer cakes and pies, mayonnaise salads, fried foods.
