How do you make a cup cake-cake?!

Question:

How do you make a cup cake-cake?

If your not sure what it is, it looks like a regular sheet cake, but really its a tear apart cup cake-cake. Any ideas of how to make sure the frosting doesn't fall through the cracks in between the cup cakes? I did a test cake and it didn't look horrible, but you could see where the holes in between the cup cakes were.
The bakery sells them, but I'm into making my son's birthday cakes and this looks fun and different.

Answers:

After baking and cooling the cupcakes, arrange them on a large platter or board. Then frost & decorate.

The professional decorators in groceries use a huge, wide, flat pastry tip, which lays on a strip of icing, rather than a spatula, which would tend to push the icing. I would make the icing a little stiffer than usual, if using a bag, and use a light hand to spread/smooth it.

Good luck! These are cute, and much easier to serve than a layer or sheet cake.
