Salted Cod? I have a box of it. What do I do with it?!

Question:

Salted Cod? I have a box of it. What do I do with it?

I really wanted lutefisk, but they don't sell it anymore but I found this "Salted Cod" made in Canada. I guess you soak it then treat it like regular fish? Can you eat it like jerky, (if you REALLY like salt)? Have you ever had this stuff? Apparently it was big with the Vikings...

Answers:

You need to soak it in water for a while to remove the salt. The salt is an old fashioned preservative used before they had refrigeration or ways to dry things easily.

You will need to change the water a few times.

Eventually, you will have pretty much just cod.

If you want to prepare it like regular fish, put it in the fridge at this point and let it dry a little so its like regular fish.

Then you can cook any fish recipe with it. Since it won;t be as good as fresh fish, I suggest something with strong flavors. I recommend you make a nice fish chowder.
