The best lemonade I've ever tasted came from Woman's Home Companion Cookbook from 1942.

-1 cup sugar
-1 cup water
-zest of 2 lemons
-1 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice (takes from 4 to 6 lemons)
-4 more cups water
Directions:
1. Combine sugar, water and lemon zest in a saucepan.
2. Stir over low heat until sugar is dissolved.
3. Bring to a boil and let boil - gently - for 7 minutes.
4. Cool.
5. Add the additional 4 cups water and the lemon juice.
6. Strain, if desired, and refrigerate.
*Note: If a sweeter lemonade is preferred, use less lemon juice in proportion to the sugar syrup.
Minted Lemonade-place some bruised mint leaves in the bottom of the pitcher before adding lemonade.
Pink Lemonade-Add a little grenadine to the lemonade.
Raspberry Lemonade-Add 1 pint crushed raspberries to boiled sugar-water mixture; strain. Add lemon juice and proceed as directed.
Limeade-Substitute lime juice for lemon juice in lemonade recipe. Add a little green vegetable coloring if desired.
Orangeade-Substitute 2 cups orange juice for lemon juice called for in lemonade recipe; add 1/4 cup lemon juice.
