When chopping onion, what can you do to prevent the odor from burning your eyes?!

Question:

When chopping onion, what can you do to prevent the odor from burning your eyes?

My mom told me a remedy a long time ago but I have forgotten it. We have tried using a wooden toothpick (somebody told me about that before) but that doesn't seem to work too well.

Serious answers only, please.

Answers:

It's not the odor, it's the reaction from the fumes from the onion on your poor eyeballs. I have had luck with the running water thing, I have actually done the "hold a piece of bread in your mouth while cutting the onion" thing (wasn't bad, but the bread got soggy, but the best was wearing swimming goggles. Worked a treat!
